American students’ math and reading scores have dropped over the last ten years, according to
a new report from Stanford University. Researchers tracked test results for students in grades 3
through 8 across hundreds of school districts, comparing how each district performed in 2015
versus today.
The results are mixed. Some districts have bounced back and improved, while others continue
to fall behind. Los Angeles, for example, made meaningful gains but still scores below the
national average. You can look up your own school district using the New York Times’ interactive
tool to see exactly how local scores have changed.
